Thank you to everyone who joined ILAQ for the 2024 Mullenjaiwakka (Lloyd McDermott) Oration.

The Mullenjaiwakka (Lloyd McDermott) Oration, delivered by the Honourable Justice Louise Taylor, took place on Tuesday, 28 May 2024, at the Banco Court, Queen Elizabeth II Courts of Law, 415 George Street, Brisbane. 

The Honourable Justice Louise Taylor, a Kamilaroi woman and the first Aboriginal woman in Australia to be appointed to a superior court, delivered the second Oration, which was hosted by the Honourable Helen Bowskill, Chief Justice of Queensland.  The Oration serves as an annual platform to educate the Queensland legal community about current legal issues affecting First Nations peoples, aiming to foster dialogue and raise awareness.

The Oration pays tribute to the memory of Mullenjaiwakka (Lloyd McDermott), Australia’s first Aboriginal barrister.  It acknowledges his achievements, commitment to providing opportunities for others, and resilience in the face of adversity.  The Oration aims to contribute to a more informed legal landscape in Queensland.
